BioMat: Modular Sustainable Architecture

The course was provided by the BioMat Group at ITKE, led by Dr. Hanaa Dahy in cooperation with the Institute of Aircraft Design, Faculty 06: Aerospace Engineering and Geodesy at the University of Stuttgart, led by Dr. Peter Middendorf, and the Open Mechanics group at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Czech Technical University in Prague, led by Dr. Jan Zeman.

The Mock-up was created in cooperation between architects, engineers, and eight architecture students with the financial support from the University of Stuttgart (Project Stuttgarter Change Labs), the German Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR e.V.) at BMEL: LeichtPro Project: FKZ 22027018, and from Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) under Germany’s Excellence Strategy EXC 2120/1-390831618 (Research Project 06).

Observable trends like the gig economy and increasing urbanization are fueling the creation of services that are shared on demand and connected. Existing mobility services, like mobike, or pay-as-you-go coworking services, like nakedHub Go, are good examples that are enhancing and reconstructing city life and work in Chinese cities. People tend to own fewer properties, fewer belongings, fewer bikes and even fewer devices and instead use sharing services. We are nearing a future where new solutions for living and working spaces will be needed.
